Vintage Battle Piece No. 16: The Long, Languid, Uber Sexy Skirt

VV: This vintage skirt is sooooo beautiful.

JJ: I know, I love it too. But to be honest I wouldn’t have thought you’d like it. I never see you in a long skirt.

VV: I wear them rarely. I like this one because I can slide my leg out. The attitude is just like that.

JJ: Dude, you look like Angelina Jolie at the Oscars. Put that leg back!

VV: No. I won’t. But in my head, I imagined myself as Diana Vreeland, that’s why I wore the big horn necklace and low shoes.

JJ: Vreeland would not have had her shirt unbuttoned to god knows where. She would’ve had a turtleneck on—like the embroidered one I fished out of my closet.

VV: My version is maybe crossed with a little bit of Johnny Depp.

JJ: I have never met anyone who gets dressed with more character references in her head than you. I don’t imagine anything. I simply try to find colors and patterns that look like a happy car crash.

Vintage Battle Piece No. 15: 1970s Crissing, crossing and pie-trimming-print Skirt

JJ: God I love this skirt. I’d wear it every day of my life if I could.

VV: This look is dedicated to Uberta Zambelleti [owner of Wait and See in Milan, who we featured on LaDoubleJ here]. She’s always dressed like this—with stripes and a big print.

JJ: Are you a milk maid or what?

VV: Yes, isn’t that cute!!  It’s a farm-life outfit.  After I leave my fashion job I’ll dress like this in the country.

JJ: This is how I dress every day of my life. A screaming skirt with a novelty looking top. I’m loving Lorenzo Serafini’s new Philosophy collection – this cardigan is so chic with its shaggy little border and I love it with these Aquazzara flats.

VV: This is your uniform. I always see you dressed like this.

JJ: I know, my poor husband! I never show up sexy.

VV: Don’t worry– it’s a good look.

JJ: Wait…..did I just win the war?

Vintage Battle Piece No. 14: A lightening-rod Lamé Dress

JJ: Believe me, I’m all for mixing prints.  But aren’t the printed pajamas UNDER the vintage lamé dress a bit much, Viv? I mean, it’s even a little over the top for me.

VV: This look is dedicated to Prada and Maneula Pavesi!  They invented this look–in fact Manuela always shot her photographs while wearing Prada pajamas. My pajamas are from Prada too and the vintage dress really looks like Miu Miu.

JJ: I love Miu Miu, worship Prada and I adore Pavesi but I say take it down one notch and do either or.  You’re giving me a massive headache.  I love the pastel metallic dress mixed up with ox blood colored details:  the flat T strap sandals by Casadei are SO chic and  leather jacket is a staple by Sportmax.

VV: That’s not a look.

JJ: Yes it is!!!!! It’s my run-to-Esselunga-in-the-cinquecento-look! Which is what us Americans in Milan resort to on wardrobe down-days.

VV: Yes. Exactly.

Vintage Battle Piece No. 13: A Fabulously Feminine Floral Print Dress

JJ: Let me start by saying that my outfit was so much better in real life than it is in this photo.  In this picture my fuzzy vintage plaid bathroom looks crazy-pants with this lovely gauzy cotton dress.

VV: I love your look. The colors totally go together.  You look like you’re going out to buy newspapers in New York.

JJ: I’d like to see what the New Yorkers have to say about that.

VV: And I want to steal your bathrobe. I’m crazy about it. Will you give it to me?

JJ: No way. I found it in the bottom of a junk bin at sunrise at the Rose Bowl flea market in LA. I drove 55 minutes in the dark for chrissakes to have that coat. The vintage dress on the other hand, is light and gauzy and pure bliss.  I have to say I love your look. It’s so Southern Italian.

VV: It’s my Capri look!  You need a shawl at night in Capri – I always bring them. I have this one in red, black or beige. The red is perfect here. I love this dress so much. I’d wear it every night in the summer.

Vintage Battle Piece No. 12: The I’m-Not-a-Bullfighter Striped Cropped Jacket

VV: This is what I’d wear to an important work meeting.

JJ: You’re joking, right?

VV: No. I actually imagine myself having a meeting with LVMH, with Arnault himself, wearing this outfit:  classic Dsquared pants, a silk shirt by Equipment and a work bag by Saint Laurent.  It’s very city girl.

JJ: I think a cropped jacket needs to be worn over a dress or with a high waisted pant or skirt to look normal.

VV: Ordinarily you’d be right but here it works. Also I hate high waisted pants. If you have hips, you need to work low-waisted pants so that you don’t emphasize them.

JJ: I can’t even think in pants. They totally confuse me. This jacket feels so playful so I wanted to put it with my favorite raffia and ribbon striped vintage skirt.

VV: Yep, and I gave you the red ribbon to wear around your waist.

JJ: Which was an excellent move, Viv. Thanks, BABE. The Prada heels meanwhile, I’ve had for a billion years and they’re still in production. They go with everything, trust me.
