The word “flat” usually has negative connotations: Before you hit high school you were flat as a board, and post college graduation you were flat broke. And of course no one likes a flat can of Coca-Light or that flat tire that ruined the road trip of a lifetime around the Amalfi coast. But when it comes to shoes, especially the ones we’re smitten with this spring and summer, flat is the new fabulous. These shoes have super style that won’t ruin your pedicure or have you limping like a peg-legged Pirate.
Personally we’re obsessed with Isabel Marant’s tasseled sandal-loafer, Marni’s gem-embellished sandals, and a novelty, striped espadrille from Chloé. Then there’s Valentino’s embroidered leather espadrille-cum-sandal and a Rochas golden jacquard sling-back—both as sexy as Catherine Deneuve in her heyday and as comfy as a pair of Egyptian cotton PJs. These first-rate flats are all we can think about and are surprisingly flattering; they keep our body naturally proportioned, ensuring we don’t look like a teetering, wannabe-tall desperado!
Having to choose which of these flatties you want to wear out the door is like having to decide what snacks to add to your pick’n’mix bag at the movies. In short, we’ll take them all and we’ll leave the blisters, bunions and aching Achilles heels at home.
